Discovering that a child you love has been sexually abused
is a shattering experience for many parents and caregivers. People
often report feelings of grief, intense anger, disbelief, guilt, fear, a
sense of betrayal, confusion about "the system" and a loss of
control.
The purpose of the NOC group is to provide support and
education to the parents and caregivers of sexually abused
children. Sessions are held weekly in the Fall and Spring.
Families are given a schedule of topics to be covered and are encouraged
to attend as many sessions as possible.
The goal of the group is to help caregivers work though
their own concerns so that they are better prepared to help the
child. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals to see
that they are not alone--others have shared similar questions, feelings
and fears.
The NOC group runs in conjunction with Heroes, Great
& Small. For added convenience, both groups meet at the same
time/location. The program is free-of-charge to participants.
Topics covered include:
-
How sexual abuse occurs and why children often wait
so long to tell
-
Dealing with conflicting feelings about the abuser
-
Behaviors sexually abused children may exhibit and
how to respond
-
When to seek professional help for yourself and/or
your child
-
Community resources available
-
What the medical evidence or lack of it means for
your child and your case
-
The role of different agencies in, "the
system," and how a case progresses through it, and who is
available to help you along the way
-
How to talk to your family members, particularly
other children, about the abuse
